What it is
Glucagon is a 29 amino acid peptide hormone made naturally by alpha cells in the pancreas. It raises blood sugar mainly by signaling the liver to break down stored glycogen and release glucose. It is sold as prescription products under names such as GlucaGen, Gvoke, and Baqsimi.
What the evidence shows
Glucagon is FDA approved for the treatment of severe hypoglycemia, and some formulations are also approved for use as a diagnostic aid to temporarily slow gut movement during radiologic exams. It is backed by a very large body of human research, including more than 1,500 registered trials reaching Phase 4.
