Computed with the same four public criteria as every profile. The human-evidence grade on an indexed profile is set automatically and may change when it is hand-reviewed. It is not a safety score, not a purity rating, and not medical advice, and not a claim that this compound treats, cures, or prevents any condition.
What it is
Secretin is a 27 amino acid peptide hormone naturally released by the small intestine that signals the pancreas to secrete bicarbonate-rich fluid. The synthetic human form, sold as ChiRhoStim, acts on secretin receptors in the pancreas and stomach and is used as a diagnostic agent rather than a treatment.
What the evidence shows
Synthetic human secretin is FDA approved for stimulating pancreatic secretions to aid in diagnosing pancreatic exocrine dysfunction, for helping diagnose gastrinoma, and for facilitating identification of the pancreatic duct opening during endoscopic procedures. Uses beyond these diagnostic roles, such as the once-popular idea of treating autism, are not supported, and controlled trials in autism did not show benefit.
